Part time Pianist or Organist

Job Description

Position Title: Pianist/ Organist or Worship Leader
Employment Status: Part-time Exempt
Reports To: Senior Pastor

Primary Responsibilities:
The Church pianist’s or Worship Leader main responsibilities are to provide musical accompaniment for scheduled worship services and other activities/ worship opportunities that supplement the Church’s music ministry.

Scheduled worship services include:
● Sunday worship (8-12 songs per worship)
○ Prelude, Opening Hymn, Entrance for Keiki Time, Hymn of Praise, Gloria Patri, Offertory/Doxology, Greetings with Congregation/ Share Da Aloha, Shalom, Postlude
● Holiday/ special worship services (Christmas, Easter, Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, Thanksgiving & All Saints.)

Additional activities and worship opportunities:
● Choir accompaniment during service and in rehearsals (not weekly)
● Piano/ organ accompaniment for children’s/ youth group plays (TBD)

Job Requirements/ Qualifications:
● Trained pianist/ organist; preferred musical degree in piano or organ
● Experience/ familiarity in church worship; prior experience with hymnal playing
● Flexibility in contemporary and traditional worship songs
● Basic competency with chord charts/lead sheets
● Sensitivity and ability to improvise during service (to play appropriate songs during prayer, tithes and offering)
● Ability to take direction and work with Pastor to coordinate song list or changes to song offerings
● Ability to communicate in a friendly and professional manner with church staff and members of the congregation

Essential Duties:
● Provide high and consistent quality of piano/ organ accompaniment every Sunday at required times
● Plan, select, and prepare special musical selections or offerings when required - according to Pastor’s directions/ needs of the worship services
● Support additional music ministry (e.g. church choir)
● Maintain an accurate account of piano/ organ needs and maintenance to Pastor/ church staff
● Pianist is responsible for communicating planned absences (preferably as soon as known) to allow for scheduling of a substitute pianist
○ Assist Pastor and church staff in finding a substitute if requested/ not available
○ Pianist is responsible for finding substitute pianist in case of scheduled accompaniments/ obligations

Other Duties:
● Participate in monthly related church, Worship and staff meetings
Working Conditions/Hours:
● On-site hours are primarily Sundays, 9:00am to 11:30pm. The actual number of hours required during any given week are those needed to fulfill the responsibilities of the position
● Acoustic Baby Grand Piano and organ is provided

Compensation:
● Salary is $9,000 per year
● The Music Director is a part-time position and is not entitled to any employee benefit provided by PUMC
